Offer Description

i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award two grants for the development of R&D activities by doctoral students, enrolled in doctoral programs, or by Master´s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, within the project “Uncovering biomechanical drivers in skin fibrosis to engineer a novel biomimetic 3D tissue model” -  Ref. 2022.06048.PTDC, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P/MCTES, PIDDAC.

Project Title: 

Position 1 and 2: “Uncovering biomechanical drivers in skin fibrosis to engineer a novel biomimetic 3D tissue model”.

Workplan and Admission Requirements:

POSITION 1: 

Preparation and characterization of hydrogels to create 3D skin models.

Mandatory requirements: 

  • Candidate holding a Master Degree or equivalent on Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering or related areas, with minimal classification of 15 (0-20), for the integrated MSc or the average between BSc and MSc;
  • Be enrolled in a PhD Program or an honor statement of capacity to enroll in the aforementioned cycle of studies until the grant is contracted; Or:
  • Be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, or an honor statement of capacity to enroll in the aforementioned course until the grant is contracted;
  • Experience in the chemical modification of polymers and preparation of hydrogels, including the manipulation of biochemical and biophysical properties;
  • Proven experience in the use of a rheometer for the mechanical characterization of hydrogels.

Preferential requirements: 

  • Experience in mechanical characterization of human tissues;
  • Experience in cell culture and skin models;
  • Motivation to pursue a PhD in the field related to the project;
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

POSITION 2: 

Characterization of cell–matrix interactions using 3D hydrogels.

Mandatory requirements: 

  • Candidate holding a Master Degree or equivalent on Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering or related areas, with minimal classification of 15 (0-20), for the integrated MSc or the average between BSc and MSc;
  • Be enrolled in a PhD Program or an honor statement of capacity to enroll in the aforementioned cycle of studies until the grant is contracted; Or:
  • Be enrolled in a non-academic degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, or an honor statement of capacity to enroll in the aforementioned course until the grant is contracted;
  • Experience in hydrogel preparation, cell culture, and characterization of cell–matrix interactions using biomaterials.

Preferential requirements: 

  • Experience in confocal microscopy and immunofluorescence;
  • Knowledge in establishing skin models;
  • Experience in 3D bioprinting;
  • Motivation to pursue a PhD in the field related to the project;
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

Legislation and other applicable regulations

Position 1 and 2: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

Position 1 and 2:

The research activities will be hosted at i3S, under the scientific coordination of Doctor Rúben Pereira.

Length time:

Position 1 and 2: The duration of the fellowships is 6 months. The expected starting date is 1st September 2025, upon availability of the financed funds.

Monthly maintenance stipend: €1309,64 according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.pdf). The payments will be made by bank transference. 

Research grants may also include other components, as the voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, article 10. 

Evaluation Criteria:

Position 1 and 2: 

The selection will be carried out according to the following criteria:

  • Detailed CV (30%);
  • Research experience with relevance for the project work plan (50%);
  • Motivation letter (10%);
  • Interview (10%).

An evaluation of the CV, previous experience, and motivation letter will be conducted, followed by a ranking of the candidates. Up to five candidates with the highest scores based on the criteria outlined above will be invited for an interview.

The final evaluation (on a scale from 1 to 100) will reflect the combined score of the assessed criteria.

Information and Publicity of Funding Granted:

Position 1 and 2: The results of the evaluation will be notified by email to all candidates. After notification, candidates have 10 working days to comment and, within that period, a complaint may be submitted by email to rh.i3s@i3s.up.pt.
